Rock Removal (Blasting) Schedule for
May 9 - May 13
 
The following plan provides details for Rock Removal by Blasting for the period of May 9 - May 13 for the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project Rail Yard and Maintenance Facility along U.S. Route 606 (Old Ox Road) and Mercure Circle as provided below:

NOTE: Hensel Phelps anticipates shutting down Old Ox Road (Rt. 606) (as described below) for a blast near the road.
 
WHAT: Rock removal by blasting will be performed by Hensel Phelps to remove the diabase rock that has been encountered on the project site to allow work on the structures and rail yard facilities at the designed elevation.
 
WHEN: The window for weekly blasting is Monday - Friday between the hours of 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Blasting will not occur on Fridays if blasting is near Route 606/Old Ox Road requiring traffic stoppage.
 
HOW: The daily blasting routine will include:
  1. Five (5) minutes prior to blast there will be a long warning signal (1 minute duration)
  2. IF BLASTING IS IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO ROUTE 606/OLD OX ROAD TRAFFIC WILL BE STOPPED 1-2 MINUTES PRIOR TO BLAST *
  3. Blast signal (One [1] minute prior)
  4. Blast occurs
  5. TRAFFIC RESUMES (IF IT WAS PREVIOUSLY STOPPED); TOTAL WAIT TIME IS APPROXIMATELY 2-3 MINUTES*
*Steps 2 & 5 are skipped if blasting is not near Route 606
