DRIVE CAREFULLY!
Expect Traffic Changes Throughout Ongoing Silver Line Construction

Construction of the 2nd phase of the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Silver Line Project is progressing rapidly within and adjacent to the Dulles Toll Road, Dulles International Airport Access Highway, Dulles Greenway, and associated secondary roadways all along the 11.4 mile alignment that stretches from Reston to Ashburn, Virginia.  Hundreds of construction related vehicles and thousands of private and other commercial vehicles must safely share these roads every day.

Under construction are six Metrorail stations, five of which are located in the median of the Dulles Access Highway or Dulles Greenway; pedestrian bridges that will be installed in segments over those highways, including the Dulles Toll Road; and multiple wayside support and storm management facilities that are adjacent to the highways and affect some secondary roads as well.  Drivers will expect multiple changes in traffic patterns both day and night, all along the alignment.

The project carefully complies with all Virginia Department of Transportation policies and regulations during the planning and execution of its traffic control plans as well as its use of signage and traffic control devices.  All work is coordinated with and approved by the organizations responsible for the affected roadways, including the Virginia Department of Transportation, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority who manage the Dulles Toll Road and Dulles International Airport Access Highway, and the Dulles Greenway management

WE NEED YOUR HELP!  PLEASE remain alert to changing conditions, expect the unexpected, watch for slow moving vehicles and heavy construction equipment, and obey all signage.  The Virginia Department of Transportation provides the following "rules of the road" when approaching a work zone*:
  • Drive at the posted speed limit. The fine for speeding in a work zone can be $500.
  • Proceed with extreme caution. Expect anything in construction sites.
  • Be aware - especially of construction vehicles moving in and out of work zones.
  • Obey signs, channelizing devices and pavement markings. They will guide you through the work zones.
  • Leave plenty of room between your vehicle and others around you. Unexpected stops frequently occur in work zones.
  • Watch for flaggers. Their direction will get you safely through the work zones.
  • Look for changes. A work zone might have changed since your last trip.
  • Please watch out for highway workers. They are somebody's loved one.
Any activity that has the potential to affect traffic is announced, in advance, to the public and the media in regular bulletins, including weekly forecasts.  To receive that information via email, sign up at http://dullesmetro.com/news-and-updates/traffic-alerts/sign-up-form/or check the project website:  www.dullesmetro.com
