Weeknight Detours of the Eastbound Dulles Access Highway
Will Continue into Late Spring

Over the next several months, between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. each night, portions of the eastbound Dulles International Airport Access Highway (DIAAH) will be closed and traffic will be diverted to the eastbound Dulles Toll Road (Toll Road).  This work is expected to begin in early February.

Lane closures will also occur on the Dulles Toll Road (Toll Road) and the Dulles Greenway.  The detours and lane closures will allow Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project crews to continue heavy construction work near Innovation Station, Herndon Station, and Reston Station.  The detours are necessary so that a large crane can be positioned on the eastbound DIAAH.

Work will take place at only one station per night.  The location for each night's work will be determined the following day, based on the progress made the previous night.  Each station detour is described below.  More detailed information will be released as the work progresses.

On the nights when work is taking place at Innovation Station, the detour will be as follows:
  • The left lane of the ramp from the eastbound Dulles Greenway to the eastbound Toll Road will be closed.
  • Eastbound DIAAH traffic to Centreville Road will be diverted onto the Toll Road near mile marker 0.2. Signage will be in place to direct drivers.
  • Eastbound DIAAH traffic, near mile marker 1.7 (approximately 5/10 mile east of the Route 28 overpass), will be diverted onto the left lane of the eastbound Toll Road.
  • Eastbound Toll Road traffic will be restricted to the two right lanes.
  • Eastbound DIAAH traffic will return to the DIAAH at mile marker 2.2 (approximately 3/10 mile west of the Centreville Road overpass), and all lanes will be restored for eastbound Toll Road use.

On the nights when work is taking place at Herndon Station, the detour will be as follows:
  • Eastbound DIAAH traffic, near mile marker 2.7 (approximately 1/10 mile east of the Centreville Road Bridge), will be diverted onto the left lane of the Toll Road.
  • Eastbound Toll Road traffic will be restricted to the two right lanes.
  • Eastbound DIAAH traffic will return to the DIAAH at mile marker 4.0 (approximately 6/10 of a mile east of the Monroe Street overpass), and all lanes will be restored for eastbound Toll Road use.
On the nights when work is taking place at Reston Station, the detour will be as follows:
  • Eastbound DIAAH traffic, near mile marker 4.0 (approximately 6/10 of a mile east of the Monroe Street overpass), will be diverted to the left lane of the eastbound Toll Road.
  • Eastbound Toll Road traffic will be restricted to the two right lanes.
  • Eastbound DIAAH traffic will return to the DIAAH at mile marker 5.1, just prior to the Reston Parkway overpass and all lanes will be restored for eastbound Toll Road use.
All work is weather dependent and subject to change.
Drivers are asked to use caution and pay attention to all signage and barricades. Large, slow-moving vehicles may be exiting and entering the highway at various times.
